Railways is determined to become fully electric
Railways has cut down support for diesel locos and asked GE (US multinational) to alter the diesel locos contract. As GE doesn't make electric locos and is not best pleased, parties will look to export. Other options for surplus locos are not revealed.
Interview: Piyush Goyal, Railway minister: I have instructed railways to complete safety work on mission mode. Railways should eliminate UMLC within 12 months (rather than 3 years) and prioritize track renewal over other track work. Govt will expand the rail network. We want to roll out a HSR network—to extend HSR to other cities—and not restrict ourselves to Japanese trains.
My aim is to modernize as many stations quickly. I will simplify bidding, extend the lease period to 99 years and go for revenue sharing. Railways will redouble efforts on other non-fare revenues (eg advertising) and improve our freight volumes. It will save from lower fuel bills and improved asset utilization (eg faster freight trains, lesser inventory). I will clear all issues pertaining to electrifying the entire network.
ISRO has presented exciting solutions which I am eager to take up. IT will be hugely beneficial for safety and other processes. I will exploit full spectrum of IT including likes of artificial intelligence and machine learning. RailTel will install Wifi in thousands of rural stations to benefit rural people living nearby.
