Piyush Goyal Railways Minister on Bullet trains & Japan jodi
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PG gives an enthusiastic and strong endorsement of Bullet trains. Fact is bullet trains can perform roles of air travel and air freight and may eventually play the role of mass transportation, thereby bringing increased access, much lower cost and very high indigenous content as compared to air transport. Farmers of perishable goods will benefit as they can access markets on the other side of India.

Bullet trains will give a big boost to the economy because most of the build is sourced in India ( ie. during construction from 2017-2022). Govt can pay its share (Rs 21,000 cr or 19%) by higher tax collections. So if India gets a boost of Rs 65,000 crore, govt collects Rs 13,000 crore at 20% tax. India doesn't lose when it pays back loans because it import substitutes by buying less imported airplanes and jet fuel. Most spare parts will be sourced from India. Trains will be built in India, as India shares IPR. India will do joint R&D with Japan and Japan will help India on safety issues. Electricity is cheap, plentiful, clean & made in India. Over time, costs will go down, fares fall & demand will go up.
Travel to Tier 2 cities will be easier with bullet trains because air travel is only viable between large cities. Bullet trains have dedicated tracks, so trains will run fast, frequently and keep to time-tables. This gives flexibility to plan journeys. If demand is there, bullet trains can be scaled up as it can carry 1200 people every 15 minutes. If demand is less, it can carry freight meant for air transport.
