Aluminium sector is witnessing a surge in demand from high users power and automobiles; and new users like appliances, smart cities, etc. Demand in India will grow from 3.3mT to 5.3mT in 5ys till 2020-21.
Nalco is tiding superbly in this environment, with revenue up 30% and net profits up 40% in H1 2017. Nalco is the lowest cost alumina producer, so its bauxite mines and alumina refineries are at full capacity. It has abundant supply of quality bauxite from captive ore mines for expansion.
After a long period of stagnation, Nalco is in midst a Rs25,000cr expansion. By 2020, it will count as a global major with 1+mT aluminium production. It is setting up state-of-art smelter tech plant in Odisha to achieve high productivity and low cost. And it will get scale and cluster benefits from major expansion to nearby Angul smelter plant and planned power plants. Nalco will do other projects, eg. it is bidding for Odisha's solar park development, mining operations in Africa, etc.
Nalco plans under: 1. Bauxite mines 2. Alumina refinery 3. Aluminium smelter plant 4. Coal mines 5. Power plants 6. Various:

- Careratings PDF on aluminium sector - Annotated
1. India is a low cost producer of aluminium
2. Growth in aluminium is not as fast as expected, though all sectors should be getting stimulated
3. India should be exporting more. Perhaps the close holding of bauxite mines has reduced competition
4. China exerts considerable pressure on profit margins. India nevertheless can export more, but it should maximise its returns by upgrading its facilities.
5. Aluminium industry can scale up its use of solar and wind power, even be the balancing force of the grid.
